RYA Radar course

In case of low visibility, a radar is a very efficient tool to navigate and to prevent collisions if you know how to use it, of course.
It is not obligatory to have a radar on board, but if there is one available, you have to use it when necessary (regulation 7 of the International collision regulations). Of course, it is assumed that the operator also has the necessary knowledge to use a radar. Therefore, NaviClass organises a course ‘Radar training’. In this radar course, you will learn to use a radar properly.
This radar course is intended for:
Crew members wanting to navigate ships equipped with a coastal or river radar.
Condition(s) to participate to the radar course:
To participate to the course ‘Radar training’, no preliminary knowledge is required.
Course material:
You will receive the RYA Manual ‘Small craft radar’ (English).
The theoretical training is given by means of a PowerPoint presentation. For the practical training of the course ‘Radar training’, we will use a realistic radar simulator on a network PC.
Programme:
Theoretical and practical course ‘Radar training’. At first, the candidate has to attend a theory course lasting half a day about:
- the functioning of a radar
- the material choice (antenna and screen)
- switching on and tuning the radar correctly, and understanding the images
- position determination by means of a radar
- navigating by means of a radar
- avoiding collisions by means of radar images (manually plotting)
Use of (M)ARPA (automatically plotting)
Naxt, there will be a practical cours lasting half a day. The candidates (at most 2 per PC) have to deal with all kinds of realistic situations such as risks of collisions, navigation, different weather conditions etc. Each computer screen simulates the radar screen of its ship. Thus, this course ‘Radar training’ is based on realistic learning experiences.
Certification:
After this training, you will not only dispose of a good basic knowledge to use a radar, but after your evaluation, you will also receive an official RYA radar certificate.
Duration of the course ‘Radar training’:
4 hours of theoretical training and 4 hours of practical training.
When does the course ‘Radar training’ take place:
- Temse on 7/3, from 09h00 till 17h00 - full
- Newport on 12/12/09, from 09h00 till 17h00 - 10 places available
- Temse on 21/02/10, from 09h00 till 17h00 - 9 places available
Other data are possible if you ask for it.
